Stripe for non-US founders — how a Wyoming LLC gives UK and European entrepreneurs full access to the Stripe payment platform

Stripe for Non-US Founders

How a US LLC gives UK and European entrepreneurs full access to Stripe's payment platform — and why it matters for your online business.

For UK and European founders building online businesses, Stripe is often the first payment processor they consider. Its developer tools are exceptional, its dashboard is clean, and its global reach is unmatched. But many non-US founders quickly discover a frustrating limitation: Stripe's most powerful features, lowest processing fees, and easiest onboarding experience are reserved for US-registered businesses. Forming a US LLC changes this entirely.

Why Stripe Treats US and Non-US Accounts Differently

Stripe operates in over 40 countries, and UK and European founders can open accounts under their home country registrations. The differences between a Stripe UK account and a Stripe US account are significant in practice, however. US Stripe accounts benefit from lower card processing fees — typically 2.9% plus 30 cents per transaction for standard card payments. UK and European accounts often carry higher fees for cross-border transactions, currency conversion charges, and additional fees when accepting payments from US cardholders.

Beyond fees, the US Stripe ecosystem offers faster access to newer products. Stripe Capital (revenue-based business financing), Stripe Treasury, and Stripe Issuing (for issuing your own business cards) are all US-first products. For a growing digital business, these tools can be genuinely valuable. US accounts also tend to experience fewer compliance holds during the initial growth phase, as the domestic US business verification path is smoother for Stripe's automated systems.

What a US LLC Gives You on Stripe

To register as a US business on Stripe you need three things: a US-registered legal entity, an EIN, and a US business bank account. With a properly formed Wyoming or Delaware LLC, all three are achievable entirely remotely. Stripe asks for your company's legal name and state of formation, your EIN, your US business bank account details for payouts, and beneficial owner identification. After approval, your Stripe account functions as a full US business account — payments from US customers clear without cross-border fees, and payouts go to your US business bank account (typically Mercury or Relay).

Accepting Payments in Multiple Currencies

A US Stripe account can accept payments in dozens of currencies while settling in USD. For UK and European founders whose customer base spans multiple countries, this is particularly useful. Pairing your US Stripe account with a Wise Business account gives you a flexible international payment infrastructure — receive USD from Stripe, convert at mid-market rates as needed, hold multiple currency balances.

Stripe Atlas vs Forming Your Own LLC

Stripe Atlas forms a Delaware C-Corporation and sets up a Stripe account in one package. It is worth considering, but it is not always the best fit. Atlas creates a C-Corporation rather than an LLC — which carries greater compliance obligations (corporate tax at entity level, annual board meetings, more complex record-keeping). For a solo founder or small team building a lifestyle business or SaaS product without immediate VC plans, an LLC is typically simpler, cheaper to maintain, and more tax-efficient as a foreign-owned entity. Forming your own Wyoming or New Mexico LLC and then opening a Stripe account gives you more flexibility and lower ongoing costs.

Tax Considerations

Stripe does not withhold UK or EU tax — that is your responsibility. Revenue received through your US LLC should be declared in your home country according to applicable tax rules. For UK founders, income through a US LLC is generally treated as foreign income and declared on your Self Assessment return. The US-UK tax treaty may affect the classification and treatment of this income. See our UK tax reporting guide for more detail.
